Shipping from the US to Nigeria’s Regional Hubs

Most freight forwarders stop at Lagos. We go further — delivering door-to-door to Port Harcourt, Abuja, Warri, and Onitsha with the routing expertise each city demands.

Lagos handles a huge share of Nigeria’s imports, but it is not always the right port for your cargo — and it is rarely the final destination. Whether you are an oilfield contractor moving equipment to the Niger Delta, a business owner importing goods to the Onitsha market, or a diaspora family shipping personal effects to Abuja, the last leg of the journey matters most. SGK Global’s Houston hub connects directly to each of Nigeria’s key regional cities, with the port knowledge and in-country team to get goods cleared and delivered without the delays that trap most shipments.

Shipping to Port Harcourt via Onne Port

Port Harcourt is Nigeria’s oil and gas capital, and it has a logistics infrastructure to match. Two sea entry points serve the region: Onne Port Complex (IATA: NGONN), about 25km from the city, and Port Harcourt Port on the Bonny River. For most cargo — especially energy sector freight — Onne is the superior choice.

Why Onne Port, not Lagos?

Less congestion
Faster vessel turnaround times than Apapa or Tin Can. Less demurrage risk on your shipment.
Oil & Gas Free Zone
Qualifying energy equipment can be imported duty-free under Free Zone regulations — an advantage Lagos ports cannot offer.
Better proximity
Onne sits closer to industrial hubs in Aba, Owerri, Uyo, and the Niger Delta — cutting inland trucking time and cost.
Deep-draft capability
The Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) handles vessels up to 12m draft and has a full container terminal operated by APM Terminals.

For time-critical shipments, SGK offers direct air freight to Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC) — cleared through NAHCO/SAHCOL and delivered door-to-door across the city and Rivers State. Air transit runs 5–7 business days from pickup in the US.

Oil & gas contractors: SGK specialises in OOG (out-of-gauge) cargo, heavy-lift equipment, and Dangerous Goods (Classes 1–9) to Onne. We handle Temporary Import Permits (TIP) for equipment intended for re-export, and have deep familiarity with NCDMB documentation. See our full oil & gas logistics guide →

Shipping to Abuja — Air Freight to ABV

As Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has no seaport. That single fact shapes every Abuja shipment: air freight to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (IATA: ABV) is almost always the right choice. Sea freight routed through Lagos or Port Harcourt must then be trucked 8–10 hours north on the Abuja Expressway — adding time, cost, and highway risk that air freight eliminates entirely.

SGK handles Abuja shipments from our Houston, TX hub directly to ABV, covering customs clearance through NAHCO and SAHCOL terminals and final door delivery across the FCT — including Garki, Maitama, Wuse, Gwarinpa, and Lugbe. Our team has specific experience with government contractors, foreign missions, and diplomatic cargo into Abuja.

Logistics for Warri & Delta State

Warri is an important industrial and commercial city, but its local port infrastructure has draft restrictions that prevent most ocean-going vessels from docking directly. SGK routes Warri-bound freight through one of two proven channels depending on cargo type and urgency:

  1. Via Onne Port (preferred for oil & gas): Cargo clears at Port Harcourt and is trucked to Warri — approximately 2–3 hours’ drive. This route keeps freight within the Niger Delta logistics network and avoids Lagos entirely.
  2. Via Lagos (Apapa / Tin Can): Cargo clears at Lagos and is transported overland to Warri — approximately 6–8 hours. Better suited for commercial goods and containerised loads where the Lagos freight corridor is more economical.

For both routes, SGK provides a through-bill covering the entire journey — US pickup, ocean freight, Nigerian customs clearance, and interstate trucking to Warri — so you deal with a single point of contact and one invoice, not a chain of agents.

Note on community levies: Interstate trucking in Delta State can involve localised checkpoints and community levies. SGK’s logistics partners in the region have established relationships that minimise delays at these points. Confirm your delivery address and any site-access requirements when requesting a quote.

Commercial Shipping to Onitsha

Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa. The majority of importers bringing goods into Onitsha — spare parts, electronics, clothing, general merchandise — are price-sensitive traders for whom freight cost per kilogram is the dominant concern.

SGK’s groupage (LCL consolidation) service is designed precisely for this market. Your goods are consolidated at our Houston warehouse alongside other Nigeria-bound cargo and shipped in a single 40ft container. You pay only for the space you use — not an entire container.

How it works
Ship any volume — from a few boxes to a pallet. We consolidate with other cargo and you pay per kg or CBM.
Delivery point
After clearance in Lagos, goods are trucked to our bonded terminal near Onitsha Main Market for convenient pickup or final-mile delivery.
Transit time
Sea LCL from Houston typically takes 30–42 days door-to-Onitsha, depending on consolidation schedule and customs clearance.
Best for
Traders, spare parts importers, e-commerce resellers — anyone shipping less than a full container on a regular basis.
Regular shippers: If you ship to Onitsha monthly, ask about SGK’s recurring consolidation schedule. Fixed-schedule sailings mean predictable delivery windows that work around your restocking cycle.

Required Import Documents

Getting documentation right before your cargo leaves the US is the single biggest factor in avoiding customs delays in Nigeria. SGK guides you through every step — but here are the core documents required for all commercial imports:

1
Form M Mandatory for all commercial imports. Processed through the Nigerian Single Window Trade Portal before shipment departs the US.
2
PAAR (Pre-Arrival Assessment Report) Calculates duties and taxes before the vessel arrives. Prevents clearance delays at port.
3
Commercial Invoice Must clearly state FOB value, product descriptions, and HS codes. Discrepancies trigger customs holds.
4
Packing List An itemised list of every package — quantities, weights, dimensions — matching the invoice exactly.

Additional documents may be required depending on cargo type: NAFDAC registration (food, pharma, cosmetics), SON certification (electrical goods), and NCDMB approval (oil & gas equipment). SGK advises on all of these at the quoting stage.

I used to have my medical equipment stuck in Lagos for weeks before it reached my clinic in Warri. Switching to a provider who knows the Port Harcourt axis saved me three weeks on every single shipment. The difference is knowing which port to use — not just Lagos by default.

Dr. Emmanuel O. — Warri, Delta State

Prohibited & Restricted Items

Nigeria Customs maintains a published prohibition list. The following are among the most commonly misshipped items that cause shipments to be seized or returned:

  • Pharmaceutical waste and hazardous chemical materials
  • Vehicles older than 15 years (restricted, not banned outright — confirm current NCS rules)
  • Fresh fruit, vegetables, and perishable food items
  • Certain textile fabrics, used clothing (bend-down select), and restricted footwear categories
  • Weapons, ammunition, and replica firearms
  • Counterfeit goods of any description

If you are unsure whether your goods are restricted, contact SGK before booking. It is faster to confirm upfront than to deal with a seized shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does air freight from the US to Abuja take? +
Air freight from pickup in the US to door delivery in Abuja takes 5–7 business days. Sea freight cleared in Lagos and trucked north to Abuja adds 8–10 weeks total. For the full breakdown of Abuja shipping options, see our dedicated Abuja shipping guide.
Can I ship a car directly to Port Harcourt? +
Yes. Vehicles are shipped via container (FCL) to Onne Port — RoRo service goes to Lagos, not Onne, so containerisation is the standard route for Port Harcourt. SGK handles all documentation, customs clearance at Onne, and trucking to your address in PH or surrounding areas including Owerri and Aba.
What does shipping from the US to Onitsha cost? +
Air cargo rates typically run $4.50–$8.00 per lb depending on the consolidator and urgency. Sea freight barrels and drums cost approximately $150–$300 depending on size and the delivery point within Onitsha. LCL sea freight is charged per cubic metre (CBM). Get a quote for an all-inclusive price including customs duties.
Do you offer door-to-door delivery in Warri? +
Yes. SGK provides full door-to-door service to Warri via our preferred Onne Port + trucking route or the Lagos route, depending on your cargo type. Our logistics partners in Delta State handle the final-mile delivery, including coordination around any community levies.
What is the advantage of Onne Port over Lagos for Port Harcourt shipments? +
Onne Port operates within an Oil & Gas Free Zone, offering duty-free importation benefits for qualifying energy sector equipment. It has significantly less congestion than Apapa or Tin Can Island, faster vessel turnaround, and is physically closer to Niger Delta industrial sites. For any cargo destined for PH, Warri, Aba, or Owerri, Onne is almost always superior to Lagos.
Is Form M required for all imports? +
Form M is required for all commercial imports into Nigeria above the applicable threshold. It is not required for personal effects or vehicle imports, though other documentation applies. SGK handles Form M processing as part of our standard service — you do not need to navigate the Single Window Trade Portal yourself.
