Shipping from the US to Nigeria’s Regional Hubs
Most freight forwarders stop at Lagos. We go further — delivering door-to-door to Port Harcourt, Abuja, Warri, and Onitsha with the routing expertise each city demands.
Lagos handles a huge share of Nigeria’s imports, but it is not always the right port for your cargo — and it is rarely the final destination. Whether you are an oilfield contractor moving equipment to the Niger Delta, a business owner importing goods to the Onitsha market, or a diaspora family shipping personal effects to Abuja, the last leg of the journey matters most. SGK Global’s Houston hub connects directly to each of Nigeria’s key regional cities, with the port knowledge and in-country team to get goods cleared and delivered without the delays that trap most shipments.
Choose Your Destination
Each city has its own optimal routing. Select yours for a dedicated guide.
Shipping to Port Harcourt via Onne Port
Port Harcourt is Nigeria’s oil and gas capital, and it has a logistics infrastructure to match. Two sea entry points serve the region: Onne Port Complex (IATA: NGONN), about 25km from the city, and Port Harcourt Port on the Bonny River. For most cargo — especially energy sector freight — Onne is the superior choice.
Why Onne Port, not Lagos?
For time-critical shipments, SGK offers direct air freight to Port Harcourt International Airport (PHC) — cleared through NAHCO/SAHCOL and delivered door-to-door across the city and Rivers State. Air transit runs 5–7 business days from pickup in the US.
Transit time & method overview
| Method | Entry point | Transit time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air freight | PHC Airport (IATA: PHC) | 5–7 business days | Electronics, medical, urgent cargo |
| Ocean FCL | Onne Port (FOT/WACT) | 25–35 days from Houston | Full containers, bulk machinery |
| Ocean LCL | Onne Port | 30–40 days from Houston | Partial loads, SME importers |
| Container (vehicles) | Onne Port | 30–40 days | Cars, trucks — RoRo not available at Onne |
Shipping to Abuja — Air Freight to ABV
As Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has no seaport. That single fact shapes every Abuja shipment: air freight to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (IATA: ABV) is almost always the right choice. Sea freight routed through Lagos or Port Harcourt must then be trucked 8–10 hours north on the Abuja Expressway — adding time, cost, and highway risk that air freight eliminates entirely.
SGK handles Abuja shipments from our Houston, TX hub directly to ABV, covering customs clearance through NAHCO and SAHCOL terminals and final door delivery across the FCT — including Garki, Maitama, Wuse, Gwarinpa, and Lugbe. Our team has specific experience with government contractors, foreign missions, and diplomatic cargo into Abuja.
| Method | Entry point | Transit time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air freight | Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport (ABV) | 5–7 business days | Recommended for virtually all Abuja cargo |
| Sea + truck | Lagos ports → road | 8–10 weeks | Only cost-effective for very large, non-urgent loads |
Logistics for Warri & Delta State
Warri is an important industrial and commercial city, but its local port infrastructure has draft restrictions that prevent most ocean-going vessels from docking directly. SGK routes Warri-bound freight through one of two proven channels depending on cargo type and urgency:
- Via Onne Port (preferred for oil & gas): Cargo clears at Port Harcourt and is trucked to Warri — approximately 2–3 hours’ drive. This route keeps freight within the Niger Delta logistics network and avoids Lagos entirely.
- Via Lagos (Apapa / Tin Can): Cargo clears at Lagos and is transported overland to Warri — approximately 6–8 hours. Better suited for commercial goods and containerised loads where the Lagos freight corridor is more economical.
For both routes, SGK provides a through-bill covering the entire journey — US pickup, ocean freight, Nigerian customs clearance, and interstate trucking to Warri — so you deal with a single point of contact and one invoice, not a chain of agents.
Commercial Shipping to Onitsha
Onitsha Main Market is one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa. The majority of importers bringing goods into Onitsha — spare parts, electronics, clothing, general merchandise — are price-sensitive traders for whom freight cost per kilogram is the dominant concern.
SGK’s groupage (LCL consolidation) service is designed precisely for this market. Your goods are consolidated at our Houston warehouse alongside other Nigeria-bound cargo and shipped in a single 40ft container. You pay only for the space you use — not an entire container.
Required Import Documents
Getting documentation right before your cargo leaves the US is the single biggest factor in avoiding customs delays in Nigeria. SGK guides you through every step — but here are the core documents required for all commercial imports:
Additional documents may be required depending on cargo type: NAFDAC registration (food, pharma, cosmetics), SON certification (electrical goods), and NCDMB approval (oil & gas equipment). SGK advises on all of these at the quoting stage.
I used to have my medical equipment stuck in Lagos for weeks before it reached my clinic in Warri. Switching to a provider who knows the Port Harcourt axis saved me three weeks on every single shipment. The difference is knowing which port to use — not just Lagos by default.
Prohibited & Restricted Items
Nigeria Customs maintains a published prohibition list. The following are among the most commonly misshipped items that cause shipments to be seized or returned:
- Pharmaceutical waste and hazardous chemical materials
- Vehicles older than 15 years (restricted, not banned outright — confirm current NCS rules)
- Fresh fruit, vegetables, and perishable food items
- Certain textile fabrics, used clothing (bend-down select), and restricted footwear categories
- Weapons, ammunition, and replica firearms
- Counterfeit goods of any description
If you are unsure whether your goods are restricted, contact SGK before booking. It is faster to confirm upfront than to deal with a seized shipment.
